Digital cameras similar to television sets, digital cameras (not including cameras in phones and tablets) also present an interesting repair niche.

The market for digital cameras is set to grow to approximately $20 billion by 2023. However, much of this growth is expected to concentrate in developing countries, whereas in the developed world the growth of digital camera sales is declining. While higher-end cameras remain profitable due to a large market of photography enthusiasts, industry reports are finding that for the average consumer, the cameras baked into the modern smart-phones have become sufficient and powerful enough for most common usage. For this reason, we advise wireless repair entrepreneurs to be cautious before entering this repair niche. The components of top quality digital cameras are expensive, they are delicate to handle, and repairing these devices requires specialized training. However, the tools needed to repair digital cameras are similar to those used to repair smart-phones, and the large base of camera enthusiasts and the high cost of quality cameras mean that it is possible to charge a premium to repair these device.

VR and AR will be a $150-billion-dollar industry. The main reason these two related technologies are seeing a resurgence is because the trends mentioned earlier (faster web speeds and cheaper electronics components) are finally making them financially viable to manufacture for the masses.

Capitalizing on this market, powerhouse companies like Facebook, Sony, and Google are planning to release affordable VR headsets (Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus, and HTC Vive respectively).

These devices will represent an entirely new medium and bring realistic and user-friendly virtual worlds to the mass market. Likewise, new models of AR glasses (think next-generation Google Glass or AR contact lenses) will also enter the mainstream, but not until the early to mid -2020s, since they still have some technological hurdles to overcome.

Virtual-and-Augmented-Reality-REPAIR-2

Overall, with their high initial price tag and delicate first-generation designs, these consumer VR devices present an
attractive potential repair market to enter.

Better yet, a high percentage of the electronic parts found in these early VR devices have much in common with modern smart-phones—this means the learning curve to repair basic damage or replace defective parts in VR devices will be relatively minor compared to other devices

Over the last few years, growth in the global television set market has slowed, largely due to an over saturation of modern flat panel displays that led the switchover from analog to digital. Even so, television sets are still a $100-billion- dollar industry that is expected to grow once again in the late 2010s due to increased demand from developing nations. However, this factor is not the only thing set to fuel the TV comeback.

To generate higher margins, television manufacturers are already well underway in pushing 4K screens as the new standard, with industry analysts expecting 4K up to 42 percent of the market. Other manufacturers are marketing curved screens as a means to provide a more immersed experience and reduce glare.

Television-Repair-6

As to whether wireless repair professionals should consider adding television repair to their list of offerings, caution is advised. Modern televisions have become a relatively cheap commodity, leading consumers to replace rather than repair damaged TVs. Higher-end TVs priced between $2,000-10,000 will attract repair business, but with two key drawbacks: repairing a television requires a specific set of skills and knowledge that can’t easily be self-taught; and repairing
these high-end TVs requires an investment in an entirely new set of tools, as well as a substantially larger work space than wireless repair operators need when repairing smart-phones.

Ultimately, repairing high-end TVs can be a lucrative niche to enter, but the repair professional must be confident that there is a market for this service in their area.

Cell Phone Repair industry has seen tremendous growth since 2010 as smartphones became more expensive and fragile. Perhaps, there is a recent influx of cell phone repair centers popping up in nearby shopping centers and malls, and promising customers a more affordable solution of fixing phones and retrieving the information stored on damaged phones. Indeed, the affordability and ability to retrieve information are the only two pillars that give the industry its current strength. However, will our two pillars continue to exist in the next 3-5 years, or is it now the time to re-evaluate the business and adapt to a changing landscape?

The biggest challenge we foresee the industry would likely face is to convince customers that repairing remains to be a cheaper alternative to a new device. Since the launch of Apple iPhone 6S, every major telecom carrier in the U.S. has provided its customers with the ability to finance phones with zero upfront payment and interest rates. Moreover, telecom carriers such as T-Mobile has gone one step further with its JUMP ON DEMAND program, offering its customers the ability to upgrade their phones up to 3 times a year as long as the customers trade in the last upgraded phone. One might argue that such benefits of early or multiple free upgrades are only available to postpaid customers who do not truly represent the customers served by a typical cell phone repair center. Perhaps, prepaid customers are even more spoiled and have gotten accustomed to heavily subsidized devices, often starting at $0 with a new line of service. Certainly, customers will soon lack any incentive to spend money on repairs that cost anything more than $0.

But isn’t it true that customers pay for repairs because of the vital data stored on their devices that they want to retrieve at any cost? Not Really. With the advent of cloud services available on both Apple and Android platforms, customers are now blessed with a particularly inexpensive solution of backing up their important data for as little as $0 a year.

In fact, it is now time to learn an important lesson from some well known cell phone manufacturers and telecom carriers whose actions have caused such uncertainty in once thriving repair industry. Both manufacturers and carriers are increasingly becoming customer centered, relying on providing their customers with the freedom to choose among different services in return for their loyalty. They understand that customers desire novelty and demand assistance, and that the customers’ issues must be addressed instantaneously. Now that we know one possible solution, it is imperative to discuss the ways to fully capitalize on the traffic that walks into your repair centers, to adjust to the changing landscape and to build your customers’ loyalty towards yourself.

When customers buy a new phone or pay to repair an existing one, they are often motivated to spend additional money on accessories that will protect their investment or enhance the experience of their investment. This is your best shot to monetize and sometimes make higher profits than you would make in a repair or a phone sale.

It is not a secret that selling accessories offer returns as high as 1000% when sold in retail. The entire retail industry appreciates the power of impulsive spending. If you offer the right products and choices to your customers, your customers will be naturally inclined to spend impulsively.

At the end, winning over your customers’ loyalty will present you with many opportunities to capitalize on your investment of opening up a repair center. I strongly believe that the repair industry will continue to thrive in the near future; however, one must always prepare for inevitable business cycles and diversity their offerings to cater customers from different segments. The ones who will timely adapt would likely emerge as long-term players of this industry and will better handle the looming challenges.

If you don’t have one already, incorporate a good buy-back program for your customers. Presently, there is a lucrative market for used phones in good cosmetic and working condition. Read your customer, understand their needs, and offer them buy-back discounts for phones you can inexpensively fix and later sell at a hefty premium. Am I indicating that the future of repair business is in recycling? You bet.

As stated earlier, majority of phones that customers choose to get repaired are expensive when bought without any subsidies or financing. Thus, used phones such as Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series, even when in bad cosmetic condition, have a strong overseas demand in developing countries. In fact, companies as big as Amazon are buying-back phones and selling them to recyclers who need consistent supply of such phones. As a repair center that has the opportunity to buyback these high in demand phones, you can either choose to sell them to
a recycler or explore the recycling industry yourself. I strongly suggest recycling these phones and exploring this growing industry that is yet to see its full glory.

Offer Cell Phone Financing.

Carry inventory of popular cell phone models and offer your customers the ability to purchase a newer device using financing options. Currently, there is a plethora of third party companies who are willing to provide reasonable financing options for customers with prime and sub-prime credit. In fact, most of these financing companies not only finance a new phone cost, but they also finance repair costs and any additional accessories customer purchases.

approved

Recall the last time you either financed a car or any other item, do you remember the salesman tacking additional goods or services and explaining you that your out of pocket cost today will remain same? Perhaps, it does sound familiar. While
I am not a trained psychologist, I can still attest that customers spend more freely when their out of pocket cost is limited on the day of purchase. After all,if Apple can successfully market people, using financing options, products at a full retail price eliminating all subsidies, then so can you.

Customers’ biggest loyalty is towards someone who can solve their present problem in the most cost effective manner. Offering a carrier’s products or products from multiple carriers will provide you with the ability to offer your customers with heavily subsidized devices, a cost effective solution for a customer in need. It will also provide you the opportunity to make additional back-end commissions and to win over your customers’ loyalty.
Offering carriers’ products also serves another important purpose: bringing a new set of customers who would learn about the repair services and other ancillary services you offer.

Moreover, for those who don’t know about residual income resulting from new activations, almost all carriers offer residual monthly income on every new customer you add to their base as long as the customer maintains the line of service you activated. This presents you with an opportunity to build a stream of income, something that keeps accruing regardless of business cycles.
